Inspired by a blast from the past, my best friend come over for dinner the other night with the makings for this Empire Diner classic – a Chili Sundae.
The Empire Diner, located on 9th avenue and 22nd street, was one of those late-night places we used to visit at 2:00 or 4:00 in the morning when we just weren’t ready to go home. Filled with a cast of characters and really good diner food, this was sort of the uptown version of Floret (but not quite), another favorite NY institution now closed. Drop us a line if you have a late night Florent or Empire Diner story to share.
And now to the Chili Sundae. Grab a couple of ice-cream sundae parfait glasses. Start with a small layer of sour cream, then chili, then shredded jalapeno jack cheese and some chopped onions, and repeat. When you get to the top, add shredded jalapeno jack cheese, chopped onions, a dollop of sour cream, diced avocado, and top with a cherry tomato. Garnish with tortilla chip and serve. Pretend its 4am in the morning to achieve the full effect.
