Get Ready for the Invasion of Food Drones!

Do you find the use of drones a bit unsettling or would you welcome this sci-fi phenomenon into your everyday life? Mind you, there’s a big difference between military drones and the mini-propellered friends about to enter our lives but still, I’ll never forget the awe (with a dash of disbelief) on my first drone siting in NYC. I couldn’t take my eyes of this thing as it flew five feet above my head while walking in the West Village at the beginning of the summer. It seemed so surreal…. suspended in air and then buzzing off, as it flew down the street before bearing right into the Meat Packing district … perhaps on its way to Google headquarters in NY?

I am sure you’ve heard about Amazon’s mission to deliver all your goodies to your door via drones, but how will this effect the food industry? As we wait for the FAA’s approval on the use of Drones as delivery mechanisms, here’a a glimpse at some of the possibilities as well as innovative uses of Drones that are happening right now. Your Personal Bartender Drone
I am pretty sure everyone I know would give this drone a try. Invented by a student, The Yura can make your “favorite beverage and deliver it directly to you.” The drone can whip up anything from cocktails to coffee and is controlled through voice commands or instructions sent via a phone or computer. Cocktails for two please!

Mumbai Restaurant Uses Drone to Deliver Pizza
Innovative solution?  I would say so. Mumbai, notorious for its traffic snarls, has achieved a first in the country after a city-based pizza outlet used an unmanned drone to expedite a delivery by taking the aerial route.  Check out the article to watch the drone make its delivery.

Follow the Money
I just read this online at SF Foodie: “…A Sausalito resort is piloting a robot program that delivers champagne directly to guest rooms. While this service is limited to those staying in a $10,000 per night suite, the hotel is already working on a second drone that will transport sweets and other goodies to all guests…”  Equal opportunity drones – how sweet!

On Demand Food Delivery & Crime Watch
Fatdoor is a private social network, a mobile app, a drone maker, and a builder of autonomous food delivery robots – combine all of these elements and you may soon see someone order a pizza on their social network or app and in no time, a pizza is delivered to your home. It can fly in formation with other drones and in doing so can also report crimes in a neighborhood on its way to and fro—all from a single smartphone app, pretty cool!
