Holiday Feasts & Festivities: China

I am sure you know about the Chinese New Year, but have you heard of the Dongzhi Festival?

China’s Winter Solstice celebration takes place on the shortest day of the year. Much like Christmas or Thanksgiving, it’s a time for families to reunite, share a meal, and celebrate light and love during the long winter night.
A traditional part of Dongzhi is the making and eating of tang yuan, sweet and savoury balls of glutinous rice. These are often brightly colored and stuffed with sweet fillings like chocolate, but we wanted to share this amazing recipe from the blog Yi Reservation. Yi’s tang yuan are stuffed with a mixture of black sesame, nuts, and sweet winter melon. Tantalizing!
Black sesame tang yuan would make an innovative addition to any holiday party menu – and they’re fun to make!
