six great reasons to move to italy… I mean, top six gelaterias in italy

by MK Burnell

It’s a well known fact among those who have spent time getting to know Italy that all gelato is not created equal. Certainly there’s no shortage of gelaterias; but less common are those artisan shops that take pride in crafting a truly exceptional confection. At its worst, gelato is still pretty tasty; but at its best, it’s a smooth, creamy, gourmet dessert that can combine the most unexpected flavors into a one-of-a-kind treat.
We wouldn’t want you to miss out. So for the benefit of those of you who may be planning a trip to Italy, we’ve put together an insider’s guide to the very best gelaterias throughout the country. If you get a chance to visit one (or all) of them, be sure to tell us about your experience!
ghignoni.jpgSituated on the outskirts of Sansepolcro in Tuscany, this family-run gelato and crepe shop is the winner of the Italian ice cream championship. If that’s not a glowing recommendation, we don’t know what is!
Il Gelatauro / Bologna

This Bologna favorite is beloved for its use of only the best natural, organic ingredients to create a gelato experience unlike any other. With imaginative flavor combinations – think pistachio, almonds and spongecake, or jasmine and bergamot, or maybe a seasonal fresh southern cactus fruit – as well as freshly mixed traditional varieties, Il Gelatauro has something to please every palate.

How does pink grapefruit with sparkling wine, or blackberry and lavender, or spicy chocolate and sour cherry gelato taste? If the popularity of San Gimignano, Tuscany’s Gelateria di Piazza is any indicator, pretty darn good. Master Gelato Maker Sergio takes pride in using only the best regional ingredients to share his love of ice cream with the world.

Just steps away from the Trevi Fountain, Valentino’s location may draw in the tourists, but its ice cream draws in the locals. Friendly staff and a variety of delicious flavors make it the perfect spot to stop in for a refreshing treat after soaking up the sunshine around the fountain.

Rome’s I Caruso is a lesser-known artisinal gelateria where you can watch your dessert being made on site. Even their whipped cream is made fresh in the store, and makes the perfect accompaniment to I Caruso’s luscious traditional-style treats.
Carapina / Florence

With seasonal flavors, all-natural ingredients and product hand-made fresh daily on-site, Florence’s Carapina does gelato right. Even the pickiest ice cream connoisseurs have been swayed by the artisinal care with which Carapina crafts its fruit, chocolate and cream desserts.
So there you have it – six can’t-miss spots for a memorable dessert during your tour of Italy – and that’s just the tip of the delicious iceberg. Buon appetito!
